In the southern riverside city of Norfolk, VA, is an eclectic optometry office by the moniker of Selden Optometry. Established about 25 years ago by an optician, it was reinvented 6 years ago into a modern, comprehensive optometry office by me. One must have a true passion for the optical portion to successfully run a boutique, high-end, unique optometry office. I have always loved the frames, and this love has only deepened since I discovered the world of boutique glasses. Now, Anne et Valentin and Lafont and Casanova are my frame friends on my boards and on my face. But, this is not where my passion for eyes stops, oh, no. The eye is endlessly fascinating and complex to study, especially since it resides in very individual heads with their own unique challenges. Practicing optometry is a far-cry from the a mind-numbing, rote boredom of "1 or 2" many lay people associate with my profession. It is the challenge of distinguishing how quickly a person reads the 20/20 line, or discovering the latent hyperopia masquerading as myopia. Ah, then there is the mystery called glaucoma, with all its intricacies. Or, brandishing the Alger brush to remove the rust ring. Then, did I even mention contact lenses, and multifocal ones to boot?!?! The many HOURS of chair time I have patiently spent adjusting and refitting multifocal contacts on my demanding, yet grateful presbyopes. No, there is never really boredom or rote routines. I am enjoying almost every minute of my optometry career, and look forward to coming to work every day - and every one for the next 25+ years more.
